Who receives the translation, and what follows from that
The same medical report carries different weight for a doctor and for an authority. A doctor needs accurate content and correct terminology and has no interest in a stamp. An authority needs a document somebody vouches for by name and seal. That is why we ask first where the document is going.

When the translation has to be sworn
A sworn (court) translation is produced by a translator listed with the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic: the translation is bound to the document, a translator’s clause is added and a round seal applied. Authorities and courts accept that as an official document, which is exactly what the Social Insurance Agency or a court will normally ask for; a commercial insurer handling a claim sets its own terms.
For simply handing a report to your treating doctor it is not needed and costs more. Where the recipient accepts an electronic form, we can issue an electronic sworn translation with a qualified signature, so nobody travels for paper.
Why medical text is different from other specialist text
Three things make medical translation demanding, and all three explain why we do not hand it to just anyone. The first is Latin and abbreviations: the same three-letter abbreviation means one thing in cardiology and another in neurology, and getting it wrong changes the diagnosis. The second is handwriting, since much of the documentation coming from Ukraine is written by hand and the stamps are often barely legible.
The third is dosage and units. Figures, units and drug names are carried over as they stand in the original, and where a medicine is sold in Slovakia under a different name we add the active substance. Anything genuinely illegible in the original is marked as illegible; we never infer what it might have said.
Confidentiality and health-data protection
Health records are a special category of personal data under the GDPR and we treat them accordingly. Only the translator working on them and the reviewer see the documents; we do not put them through public machine translation engines, and on request we delete the working files once the job is delivered.

Do I need a sworn translation of a medical report?
It depends on the recipient. A treating doctor is usually satisfied with a professional translation. The Social Insurance Agency, an assessment physician and a court normally require a sworn translation with a seal; a commercial insurer sets its own terms. Can you handle a handwritten report?
In most cases yes; handwriting from Ukrainian and Russian practices is routine for us. Before we start we look through the scans and tell you which passages are legible. Anything genuinely illegible is flagged in the translation rather than guessed at.
Do you translate between Ukrainian and Slovak both ways?
Yes, and it is our most frequent pair. We work just as regularly from Russian and into Czech, English and German, for instance when you send documentation to a clinic abroad.
How do you handle confidentiality and the GDPR?
Health data is a special category of personal data. For a sworn translation one copy stays with the translator for ten years, as § 23(7) of Act No. 382/2004 Z. z. requires. With companies and clinics we sign an NDA.
